Assemble an Emergency Kit for your Family 

Your family should be able to survive comfortably on your own for at least 3 days following an incident.

  • Water - the absolute necessity:
    • 1 gallon/person/day for 3 days
    • Store in sealed, unbreakable containers
  • Food
    • Canned and non-perishable foods
    • Manual Can opener
    • Matches
    • Knife
    • Household bleach
    • Paper towels
  • Basic Supplies
    • Blankets
    • Layers of Clothing
    • Battery-powered flashlights
    • Battery-powered AM radio
    • Spare batteries
    • First Aid Kit
    • Tool Kit
  • Personal care
    • Personal medications
    • Bathroom tissue
    • Hand wipes/hand sanitizer
    • Duct tape/heavy duty garbage bags
  • Communications Plan
    • List of Contact numbers for each family member to carry, include cell and home phones
    • Out-of-State contact
    • Family phone tree
    • Local contact- to care for children, elderly
  • Other
    • Cash and credit cards and Personal identification
    • Copies of important papers
    • Special items for baby, elderly, pets

 Also, consider keeping a disaster kit at work or in your car. Ask yourself "What could I not do without if I were stranded at work?"
